biography
. . . .
I have been a practicing visual artist for over thirty years. Having lived in Iowa, New York, Colorado and for the past sixteen years in Washington state, I have come to see that time spent in these vastly different environments has influenced my experience of place as well as informed the visual and symbolic language that I use in my creative work.
Beginning in 2018, I spent two and a half years immersed in the vast terrain of depth psychology. As it’s name implies, depth psychology draws one beneath the surface of things, pointing towards the impulse of the soul in which the image is rooted. It was during this intensive study that the roots of my earliest interests became conscious. Here in these intersections of the human and more-than-human worlds, symbol and metaphor are imagined and given form.
I received my MA in Engaged Humanities and the Creative Life with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2021. My earlier education resulted in an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 1988 and a BFA from the University of Iowa in 1980. I have been awarded a number of national, regional and local grants. Over the last several years since my move from the arid high plains of Colorado to the lush and wet pacific northwest, I continue to explore my role as an artist and how I hope to engage in the larger story of these times we are living in.
artist statement
. . . .
Art making is ritual to me. My work dwells in the exchange between nature and culture. In the ineffable space between inside and outside, the visible and the invisible, the physical and the spiritual. What can be described as dream, and what is waking? What are the threads that weave through our lives that connect us to place, to one another? I express these relationships and connections sometimes using a camera or paint, other times using found materials and images ~ abandoned books, donated fabrics, gold leaf, river water and walnut ink.
In Robert Bly’s words, “Ritual creates a second flow of events ~ and we enter that stream or not, as we wish. The idea of ritual is strange to our ears; it say that if something is healed in the other world, something is healed in this world also…” (The Sibling Society)
